The Tower of Babel - 1997, Imperia/ Italy

Carin Grudda

Juxtaposed to the Tower of Babel is another biblical symbol, the ladder of Jacob. It, too, reaches from the earth to the heavens, stairs build up in a spiral to the moon and from there further into paradise. It was this ladder that Jacob dreamed of, after having seen the face of God. And he saw angels descending to the earth und the souls of the dead walking up into heaven.

At this place of his dreams he founded the town of Bethlehem. Dante, the greatest writer of Italy, described the ladder of Jacob in his “Divine Comedy” as the purgatory where the soul of the deceased is judged and freed from its earthenly guilt.
